The way communities seek to grow has undergone a major shift. In the past, attracting businesses was job one. Now the old incentive model no longer works. Smart communities follow this bedrock principle: capital follows talent, and talent follows place. Rather than touting themselves as “shovel ready”, they focus on placemaking. They do everything possible to make sure their community attracts talent and fosters entrepreneurial opportunity. When people want live, work, and play in a community, new companies will follow, which in turn attracts more talent. This is how vibrant communities happen: organically.
